I've found that many of these concerns can be alleviated by listening well, restating the your expectations and maintaining good communication throughout the life of the project. If the project is fully understood from the beginning, the project completion date will be estimated more accurately. Also, good communication makes the difference when unknown variables unexpectedly lengthens the project timeline.
